If you answered “yes” to any of the questions below, your pain may be caused by muscular imbalances. These imbalances and compensations develop as a result of activities in our daily lives. We sit at desks and drive for hours, then sit more and watch television. Some people, in the effort to be more active play sports or exercise. While a great alternative to sitting, these too can cause imbalances if there is an emphasis on repetitive movements.
Stand in front of a mirror in a normal, relaxed position and answer these questions.
- Are your feet pointing straight ahead?
- Is one foot turned in or out more than the other?
- Is there a difference in the weight or pressure in your feet, right vs. left, toes vs. heels?
- Are your kneecaps facing in or out instead of forward?
- Is one of your hips or shoulders higher than the other?
- From the side view, check your head and hips–are they in front of your shoulders or ankles?
